Why Women in Medicine Apologize Before They Even Speak
“I’m sorry, but…”
“Maybe this is stupid…”
“I could be wrong…”
A lot of brilliant women in medicine unconsciously shrink themselves before they even communicate an opinion.
Not because they lack intelligence.
Because they’ve been conditioned to soften themselves to remain acceptable.
Especially in environments where confidence from women is often interpreted differently.
So over time,
many women start cushioning everything they say.
Over-explaining.
Apologizing.
Minimizing themselves before anyone else can.
And eventually,
that constant self-editing becomes exhausting.
The issue is not competence.
It’s nervous system conditioning around visibility, rejection, and belonging.
Inside my programs we work on grounded communication.
Not performative confidence.
Not dominance.
Safety inside your own voice.
One client shared:
“Creating a safe space for meaningful conversations helped me reframe overstimulation as a strength, not a weakness.”
That reframe matters.
Because confidence is not becoming louder.
It’s no longer needing to apologize for existing clearly.
And honestly?
That changes everything
from leadership to relationships to self-trust.
