Why You Keep Waiting for Life to Slow Down Before You Start Living

How many times have you told yourself, "Things will be better after this rotation… after this project… after things settle down"? What if the life you've been waiting for isn't waiting on a different schedule, it's waiting on a different mindset?

If you're like many women in healthcare, your life has been divided into milestones.

I'll rest after residency.

I'll travel after fellowship.

I'll spend more time with my family after this promotion.

I'll prioritize my health when things calm down.

I'll be happier when life gets less busy.

We become experts at postponing our lives.

Not because we don't value them, but because we've spent years believing that what's right in front of us always has to come first.

Patients.

Meetings.

Schedules.

Responsibilities.

Somewhere along the way, "later" becomes the default.

And before we know it, years have passed.

The Habit of Delaying Joy

Medicine teaches us to think ahead.

To prepare for the next challenge.

To solve the next problem.

Those skills make us excellent clinicians.

But they can quietly rob us of the ability to be present.

When we're always looking toward what's next, we miss what's happening right now.

We celebrate an accomplishment for a moment before chasing the next one.

We finish one goal and immediately replace it with another.

Eventually, life begins to feel like an endless checklist instead of something we're meant to experience.

The Life You're Working So Hard For Is Happening Now

One of the biggest mindset shifts I experienced was realizing that my life wasn't waiting for me on the other side of a less stressful season.

It was happening in the middle of the season I was already living.

My relationships couldn't wait until my schedule was lighter.

My health couldn't wait until I had more time.

My happiness couldn't depend on circumstances that might never arrive.

That realization was uncomfortable.

But it was also incredibly freeing.

Because it reminded me that purpose isn't found someday.

It's practiced today.

Purpose Is Built in Ordinary Moments

We often think purpose has to be something extraordinary.

A new career.

A big decision.

A dramatic life change.

But more often than not, purpose is found in ordinary moments.

It's choosing to be fully present during dinner instead of answering emails.

It's taking a walk with your spouse without talking about work.

It's laughing with your children without feeling guilty that you're not being productive.

It's calling a friend you've been meaning to reconnect with.

Purpose isn't always about changing your life.

Sometimes it's about paying attention to the life you already have.

Ask Yourself a Different Question

Instead of asking,

"When will life finally slow down?"

Try asking,

"How do I want to experience today?"

That simple question shifts your focus.

It reminds you that while you can't always control your schedule, you can choose how present you'll be within it.

Some days will still be hard.

Some seasons will still demand more from you.

But purpose isn't about waiting for perfect conditions.

It's about refusing to postpone your life until everything feels easier.

Don't Miss the Life You're Building

One of my clients shared something that stayed with me.

"I realized I had become so focused on getting through each week that I forgot to enjoy the people I was working so hard to provide for."

I think many of us can relate to that.

We become so committed to building a meaningful life that we forget to actually live it.

Your career matters.

The work you do matters.

But so do the quiet moments.

The conversations around the dinner table.

The weekend mornings.

The relationships that fill your heart.

Those moments aren't distractions from your purpose.

They are your purpose.

You don't have to wait for life to slow down before you start living it.

You can begin today.

One intentional moment at a time.
